Portal to Social Change: Assessing Class Reversals, the Collapse of Neoliberalism, and the Post-Pandemic Biopolitical Apparatus

Let’s flashback a few years ago, when the world was hit by the Covid-19 outbreak. The Covid-19 pandemic began with a case of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection in Wuhan Province, China, in January 2020. Globally, the pandemic spread throughout the world. The speed of this cross-border transmission exposed the fragility of the long-praised globalization, where physical interconnectivity between countries actually became the main route for the spread of deadly pathogens.

biological hazards have shocked markets, countries, and society. Overall, we see that all parties are unprepared for the explosive spread of the virus. Markets, countries, and society are taking steps toward a new normal equilibrium. This unpreparedness has triggered mass panic, shortages of personal protective equipment, and global supply chain disruptions that have forced fundamental restructuring of economic governance and public health.

From a sociological perspective, during this pandemic, social changes will occur, particularly in the process of social interaction. This will have the greatest impact, aside from the economy, of course. Social interaction, particularly face-to-face opportunities, will become increasingly limited and even difficult. The fading of the habit of shaking hands, gathering, and having face-to-face discussions marks a temporary anomie, where the social structures that normally bind people together are suddenly paralyzed and replaced by physical distance that separates them.
