The Politics of Meaning in the Post-Traditional Era: The Dialectics of Social Construction, Secularization, and the Digital Ummah

One reason religion seems irrelevant today, according to Karen Armstrong, is that many of us no longer feel that we are surrounded by the supernatural. Our scientific culture focuses solely on the physical, material world before us. This extreme rationalization has eroded the spiritual sensitivity of modern humans, turning transcendental reality into mere cold empirical calculations.

Peter L. Berger also revealed that observers of religious life today agree that religion has been marginalized from the modern world. This marginalization of religion has been dramatically formulated as “God Is Dead” or the “Post-Christian era,” or more gently expressed as a global trend or an inevitable trend. Secularization is seen as a logical consequence of the growth of scientific reason, which has gradually pushed theological dogmas from the public sphere into the quiet of the private sphere.

Thomas Altizer, a “radical” theologian, stated in conventional and straightforward terms that “we must recognize that God’s death is a historical event, that God died in the world, in the history of our existence.” Berger also said that every human society is an effort to build a world. This world-building is not merely a matter of material arrangement, but rather a collective effort to reject chaos ( anomie ) and establish a meaningful order for human existence.
